We would like to welcome guest poster Rufus Saccone with his take on the role of nutrition in the life of your pet. Enjoy!

We are all aware that a good diet is key to our overall health. It increases levels of energy, helps to ward off sickness, boosts the health of skin and hair, and makes the body feel fighting fit. Why should things be different for your pet? Luckily, people are realizing that they should be giving the same consideration to their pet\’s diet as they do to their own. Besides plenty of loving attention and daily exercise, a healthy diet is the most significant thing that you can give your animal.

Regrettably, there are plenty of low quality pet foods available, and because they are usually much less expensive than good quality food, you may be tempted to buy them. With such a plethora of products available, it\’s tough to distinguish the good from the bad. That, combined with the dreaded table scraps that certain individuals give their pet, is a recipe for disaster! \’People food\’ causes various stomach issues, or something more serious such as pancreatitis.

Premium pet foods are the way to go. These varieties of food are made out of the best quality ingredients, providing optimum nutrition for your pet. Cheap pet food can lead to various of problems, such as stomach distention, irregular bowel movements and obesity. Only feed your pet the recommended amount according to their size, and keep a regular schedule, feeding them twice daily. Don\’t be tempted to leave food out all the time, as you will forget precisely how much your pet has eaten, and this will definitely result in weight gain. Preeminent brands of high quality pet food include Hills Science Plan, Iams and Eukanuba.

Kibble should be the primary component of your dog\’s diet. These foods contain a large amount of animal protein, followed by vegetables and fat. Pay attention to the ingredients and ensure that meat is at the top of the list. Try to change the kind of meat whether turkey, lamb, chicken or beef) every couple of months, gradually adding the new type of food. Stay away from corn or wheat products as they can lead to serious skin allergies and ear infections. Healthy grains include barley and rice. Don\’t buy food that includes meat \’by-products\’, as these can be from any part of an animal, including intestines, brain and bone. Remember to choose a dry food that is age appropriate: puppy, adult or senior. The food is manufactured according to specific nutritional requirements according to age.

Cats have rather different requirements, with a minimum of 75% of their nutrition having to be wet food. This helps with kidney function and dilutes their urine. If your cat has previously suffered from bladder or kidney disease they shouldn\’t eat any dry food whatsoever, as it can lead to dehydration. Cats also require a larger meat content in their food than dogs, as they can have problems digesting plant matter. Ensure the first ingredient listed is meat or fish, and choose a variety with less than 10% of vegetable content. A good rule of thumb is to choose a cat food with the minimum of ingredients. Your cat has to consume taurine in their diet, as a deficiency can cause heart problems and blindness. If this essential amino acid isn\’t contained in the food, they should take a dietary supplement.

When you change a flavour or brand of food, be sure to introduce it slowly, mixing it in a little at a time. This could take seven days or more if you have a particularly picky eater. Keep an eye on any changes in the skin and coat, and pay close attention to a change in stool consistency.

Now you know the best type of food your pet, you need to think about where to buy it. While you could be tempted to just get something at the grocery store, you really ought to purchase the food from a reputable pet store. The staff are extremely well-informed, and can give you advice on the ideal food for your pet. Unfortunately, some people just don\’t have the time to make a trip to a specialized pet store. The elderly, or those with disabilities may not be able to handle hefty bags or multiple cans of food. The solution to this problem is an online pet store, as they usually carry a comprehensive selection, at extremely affordable prices. Another benefit of the majority of these online stores is free shipping Just look over the website, place your order, and the pet food will arrive on your doorstep!

All I have to do is turn my back for a moment and our dog eats poop.

I understand that all pets are a little different, but this puppy was turning out to be a particularly tough issue.

I went through all that I’d done in my head and then went over it again.

Giving her extra attention? Sure am.

Providing only dry food? Sure am.

Picking up after the dogs sooner rather than later? Sure am.

So what’s left to do?

Although it was a bit of an adventure, mostly because of me, we did finally get the problem solved with pills designed to stop animals from engaging in Coprophagia.

Once we gave her the pills, the next time she went out she smelled her feces and walked away. Too easy? Yup.

She walked right over to our other dog’s mess and ate that instead! I’d been unwittingly encouraging the behavior by making her own poop unpalatable and her sister’s comparatively delectable.

The solution was to order another bottle online (should have done that in the first place) and make sure that both dogs got a pill crushed into their meals (the easiest way to do this is to use two spoons).

The Result

Success! I’m very pleased to say that it’s now been close to 30 days without us seeing that the dog eats poop.

If I could change what I did, I’d give the pills to both dogs from the beginning. But I really do like giving the extra attention, so I’d leave that. It’s really good for both of us!

I hope my articles help you if your dog eats poop, good luck!

If this dog eats poop, I’ll be really surprised. That’s because we’ve gone through the whole rigamarole with this new puppy. I’ve done the research and how to best deal with this problem. Here’s what we did:

We started off with giving only dry dog food to avoid her smelling any undigested foodstuffs. This really seemed to make a difference for the first three days or so. But then we went away for a few days on vacation.

Any routine that’s upset in the life of a dog can have them off kilter. Not having mommy and daddy around fits that bill and Linsey used the opportunity to show me she was mad about it and began with poop eating in my presence to show me.

From my first post on this site, I naturally recognized this as a call for attention so spending a little more time with her is helpful, both for her and for me (it’s always nice to take a break).

Our next post will outline what we had to finally do to eliminate this problem. If your dog eats poop, you won’t want to miss it.

Dog Eats Poop? Easy Problem To Solve!

“The dog eats poop!” I said to my wife after she asked me what was wrong. We had just gotten our new Miniature Schnauzer puppy and were both so excited to see her grow up. The poop eating thing was a definite problem though.

We figured we’re both smart people, it should be no problem to give the dog more food or something. That was not helpful, and you’ll see why later in this article.

We racked our brains and determined that some research was in order since neither of us are veterinarians. Here’s what we discovered:

Coprophagia is the official name for a dog eating their own (or other dogs) poop, but don’t worry about pronouncing it. We’re going to solve the problem with this website so you don’t have to deal with this disturbing little habit.

Without getting into a ton of details, there are multiple reasons that a dog may eat their own or another dog’s feces. But we’ll touch on them briefly because understanding the problem is the key to solving it.

Briefly, here are the common causes of Coprophagia:

The mother of a litter of animals may eat any poop the puppies leave in their area to make sure things are clean. This instinct is often copied by their young, as kids do tend to learn by example.

Undigested food may smell good to your pet and entice them to eat poop.

They may simple be acting out in an effort to gain additional attention.

Here’s your action plan if your dog eats poop:

First, give a little more attention to your pet- even just a few extra minutes a day throwing a ball will brighten your pet’s day and decrease their need for attention.

If that doesn’t work, try giving only dry dog food, which is more easily and thoroughly digested and will decrease the enticing (to them) smell.

Your last line of defense is to purchase some
pills designed to stop this behavior. Coprophagia pills are added to meals and give the feces a bitter taste while not affecting the flavor of the food.

Good luck and enjoy your pet!
